DANE Project: Improving Access to Technology for Children with Disabilities

DEVELOPMENT

Belatrix’s Mobile Lab is working with non-profit organizations to develop two apps.

The first one is for children with ASD. It is intended to help stimulate the standard sequence of development of mental abilities. Since children with ASD have trouble realizing that their own emotions or mental states might not be
shared with other people, this app helps to guide them through a sequence of logical developments to help better recognize emotions.

The second app in this project is designed to help young adults with Down syndrome integrate into society. It can help them develop the social skills that will allow them to be productive in the workforce.

This social initiative seeks to establish Argentina as Latin America’s leader in mobile apps for special education.

Hackatrix

DEVELOPMENT

As part of the efforts to contribute to society from a technology approach, Belatrix started in 2013 a program of hackathons that promote a new way of developing software: not only stimulating teamwork, but also creating a positive
impact on the community.

The first hackathon was in Mendoza followed by Peru. Developers in each country worked in teams to solve a social problem. Taking advantage of the benefits of Agile development, they developed fully functional apps aimed at providing
quick and innovative solutions to the community. All projects presented in the events are required to have a positive impact on society.

The results surpassed all expectations – each hackathon saw knowledge exchanged and experience gained. The inventiveness and creativity on display demonstrated how software development can work as an engine for social development

Some of the projects included:

  • A mobile app to help find missing people, using geo-location and connections to the emergency services
  • An online job seeking platform/portal, based on social recommendations

Miguel Giaquinta Scholarship Program

EDUCATION

In 2013, the Belatrix community suffered the loss of one of its most beloved colleagues: Miguel Giaquinta. In his honor and in collaboration with FONBEC, the company
created and launched a program that helps low-income promising engineers attend school and access training opportunities.

Currently, 35 children from Mendoza are being sponsored by their godfathers, members of Belatrix, to help them continue their studies and build a future in the professional world.

Comedor ‘Inmensa Esperanza’

CHILDHOOD

Since 2012, Belatrix has been collaborating actively with this organization that provides food and shelter to deprived children.

What originally started as an internal initiative of the employees to gather money every month later became a formal relationship with the organization. Currently, Belatrix collaborates financially with the shelter, funds that are used
to buy food and develop courses and training aimed at the parents.

Big donations of food and gifts are organized for special occasions such as Christmas or Children Day. But the aid is not limited to a financial aspect only: for special occasions, some employees dress up as clowns to entertain at the
shelter’s celebrations, bringing joy and laughter to all the attendants.

Ronald McDonald Charity Night

CHILDHOOD

Thanks to the sponsorship and support of local organizations, Ronald McDonald House helps give shelter to thousands of families in need. Annually, they organize a “Charity night” to gather donations. Belatrix has been collaborating
with this NPO for over 6 years, buying tickets to this dinner that are later raffled among Belatrix’s employees

Ronald McDonald House works as a temporary home for families with children in oncologic treatments, transplants or complex diseases at Dr. Humberto Notti Hospital.

Christmas Spirit

CHILDHOOD

All of Belatrix’s Lima members sponsor a Christmas gift for children of the shelter “La Victoria”. They deliver the presents along with a stock of food supply sent by Belatrix to help these kids enjoy a pleasant holiday at the
institution.

Children’s Day

CHILDHOOD

Every August, Belatrix organizes a party to celebrate Children’s day. It’s a huge celebration that every kid can´t wait to join, accompanied by their parents.

This event not only promotes the interaction between employees and their relatives in the workplace, but it also gives opportunity to meet and share a special celebration with all the families of Belatrix.

Re-use, Re-duce, Re-cycle

GREEN MINDSET

Belatrix Lima offices are strongly focused on activities that involve an orientation towards recycling. As part of the recycling program, all the waste generated in the offices is consciously classified as a way to contribute to our
environment.

Bottle caps are collected to help the community organization “Help us to help”. Taking advantage of the huge amount of trash, this organization gathers and recycles bottle caps to build wheelchairs for children with disabilities

Healthy Fridays

HEALTH

A desk job can be literally a pain if we don’t adopt healthy habits to help our body and mind to be awake, energetic and well. That’s why our Lima offices have adopted “Healthy Fridays”. Once a week, two volunteers walk in every office
sharing exercises to fuel and stretch the body. The initiative’s been widely welcomed among all our people!

Vaccination

HEALTH

As part of the benefits employees can access in the company, Belatrix encourages the uptake of the flu vaccine to get immunized against seasonal influenza. The benefit is available for all employees of the company.

Aldeas Infantiles SOS

DEVELOPMENT

Aldeas Infantiles SOS (or SOS Children’s Villages) is a private international non-profit organization dedicated to furthering children’s rights. They
assist socially disadvantaged and impoverished families and children without adequate parental care, placing them in temporary housing and providing a safe and nurturing environment to drive their development and autonom, as well as
strengthening their family and community networks. They are currently running 11 programs in Peru and Belatrix is cooperating on the Callao Program, which reaches 949 people.

Belatrix created a coordinated aid system between the company and its employees, where money is raised on a monthly basis and delivered to this Village to support the children living there. The company also organizes events and other
activities to assist this Village’s population during the year in general and in certain festivities in particular.
