The technology industry is at fever pitch about the Internet of Things (IOT) and its potential. At the consumer electronics show at the beginning of the year, Samsung announced it would create a $100 million fund for IOT. Just a few weeks ago IBM pledged $3 billion to create a dedicated IOT unit at the company. GE meanwhile is betting big on IOT being a game changer – in their research on the “Industrial Internet” they argue that IOT could add $10-15 trillion to global GDP by 2035.
Despite these very significant announcements however, there is some concern about excessive hype around IOT. Gartner analysts for instance last year placed IOT at the top of the “peak of inflated expectations” in their hype lifecycle. In particular the continued lack of interoperable standards means that while devices may be connected to each other, we’re still far away from developing “ecosystems” where different devices can easily communicate with each other.
Tomorrow, Tuesday 21 April, I will host a webinar featuring Belatrix´s CEO, Luis Robbio, and subject matter experts Sergio Infante, Diego Gil, and Alejandro Passcon, with the aim of cutting through the hype and find out what IOT means for chief technology officers (CTOs). It will be an open discussion, and we’ll be delighted to take questions from the audience- so if you have a question about IOT or simply want to find out more about what it means for your business, register here.
